In the Springer Encyclopedia of Education and Information Technologies one of the articles is: Implementation of ICT in Secondary Schools, written by Pieter Hogenbirk. It describes several tools to assess and measure the stage of implementation of the use of ICTs in Secondary Education.

ICT in Education: literacy, enhancement and personalization

broader perspective on ICT in education: 21 st century skills including digital literacy, enhancement of the learning and personalization of the organization. These aspects are considered within three generally formulated objectives for education: to bring pupils to self-fulfilment, to create re sponsible and involved citizens and to prepare them for a future working career. 

  • Step 1: The necessity of ICTs in education is not negotiable anymore. 
  • Step 2: ICT as subject and ICT skills as core element of 21st century skills must be taught. 
  • Step 3: ICT should also be used for enhancement of the learning , by teacher and student.
  • Step 4: ICT enables a personalization of the learning environment.

ICTs in the Air
Because of the predicted shortage of ICT workers a local program has been set up to make young students (age 14-18 y) more enthusiastic about informatics and ICTs. In the program students perform assignments that are created by local ICT companies and institutions. The program is open for older students to get a grade for the subject informatics and for younger students to recognize their interest in ICTs at all.
